The trout illustrated here is considered to be “pure strain” and being larger and more mature than the Gance Creek specimen, it shows more typical adult coloration.

7. LAHONTAN CUTTHROAT TROUT. Salmo clarkE henshawi. Heenan Lake, California.

DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS: The usual dull brassy coloration of Great Basin trout is evident in this race, although at spawning time males may develop rose or reddish tints along the lateral line and on the gillcovers. The spots are round, fairly large and well distributed over the body and frequently there are numerous very smail spots on the abdomen.
NATURAL RANGE: Lahontan Basin and tributary streams in California and Nevada, excepting the Humboldt River. At present this trout is maintained in Walker and Pyramid lakes by hatchery input, althouglj the stock may be somewhat hybridized. Pure strains still occur in Summit Lake, Nevada, and in headwaters of the East Carson River, California.

The specimen illustrated is from a population considered to be essentially pure straln. Being much smaller than the Lahontan cutthroat shown in Plate 7, the parr marks are evident and the brassy color is just beginning to develop.
